Data Interoperability between CRIS (or similar systems) and Researchfish for Research Organisations
Reporting on the outcomes of research is an important requirement for research funding organisations. The information is used so they can demonstrate and communicate the impact of their investment in funding, to maintain transparency and to advise and direct future programmes and funds.
Note: This guide covers data interoperability options between CRIS (and similar systems) and Researchfish. If your organisation uses Pure, we have a separate guide specifically for interoperability between Researchfish and Pure.
Researchfish is a tool commonly used by funding organisations to manage their research outcomes reporting process, in which the recipients of grants and their institutions submit their research outcomes during an annual submission period. CRIS and similar systems can be used to create data to send to Researchfish.
This will help:
- Reduce reporting burden
- Import outcomes data from CRIS or similar systems into Researchfish
- Primarily Research outputs, but also support for some other outcome types (from Datacite)
- Two main areas of functionality within Researchfish
- Interoperability Uploader
- Researcher Records (supports the uploader)
Requirements of records to be imported
- Research outputs sent from CRIS must have a persistent ID: one of…
- CrossRef DOI (Research outputs)
- PubMed ID (Research outputs)
- Datacite DOI (publications, Audiovisual & Image, Dataset, Software)
- Linking to Researchfish data requires one of the following be provided:
- Funder and grant information (needs to match with existing data in Researchfish)
- Information about the researcher (this is handled via “Researcher Records”; see below for further information)
Creating Researcher Records
A separate guide for Researcher Records functionality can be found here.
How to access CRIS integration features
- User account requires “Upload Access” role enabled
- RO Full (Administrator) users can be granted the “Upload Access” role by an existing Researchfish administrator user at their organisation (navigate to e-Val > User Accounts, and then edit the permissions of the relevant administrator)
- RO Lite (Compliance) users need to contact rfclientsupport@elsevier.com to request the “Upload Access” role be enabled on their account
Prepare the Interoperability upload file from provided template
- Populate the interoperability template which can be downloaded from Researchfish on the “Interoperability Uploader” page.

Populate the interoperability template (cont.)

Note that not all fields from the report are mandatory, but may assist in future logging/remediation work if required
Populate the interoperability template (cont.)

2. Save your completed template, and then return to the Researchfish interoperability uploader page. Select “Choose file” to locate the completed template, and then select “Upload”.

3. Upon processing the upload, the system will generate a file for download that allows you to review which uploads were successful, and the reason for any failures.

Updating CRIS (or similar systems) with Award/Research Output attributions from Researchfish
CRIS and similar systems provide a bulk update job that enables institutions to use information exported from Researchfish to bulk associate award/project data with publications.
Information on how to export data from Researchfish for use in the bulk update job is available via the attached webinar on Data Extraction.
